While the mobile Web presents unparalleled opportunities to capture the attention of local consumers ready to call or visit a store (50 percent of consumers visit a store within one day of their local search on their smartphone according to Google), it can be limited in terms of user experience.

A mobile app, however, can, according to a Usablenet e-book on the subject, take advantage of the phone's native functionality (camera, GPS), the ability to engage while offline and the expectations of users using these devices. That said, it's a difficult decision whether to invest in a branded mobile app, as a company will want to ensure the benefits outweigh the costs.
